Five Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants in Amsterdam

Looking up one of Amsterdam's canals: canal houses can be seen along the back and right, people sitting in tables can be seen to the left.

With its plentiful and diverse food offerings, Amsterdam is a foodie’s paradise. Even those who follow a plant-based diet, such as myself, can find a place to eat with little effort. I traveled to Amsterdam last year, and here are five vegetarian-friendly restaurants that I dined at and thoroughly enjoyed.

Mortimer

My lunch at Mortimer: the Mexican avocado sandwich

A popular spot among locals for brunch, Mortimer is centrally located in downtown Amsterdam and features a tantalizing selection of veggie-friendly dishes. Seating is limited, so come early or be ready to wait a little while.

Restaurant de Waaghals

One of the dinner courses at Restaurant de Waaghals

An entirely vegetarian restaurant, Restaurant de Waaghals boasts a seasonal, surprise menu. The contents of your dinner are determined by how you respond to two questions: vegan or vegetarian and three or four courses. The dishes are artfully prepared and tase just as good as they look.

Factory Girl

Lunch at Factory Girl: shakshuka served with three slices of bread and a side salad

Oh-so-delicious shakshuka from Factory Girl

Located in the De Pijp neighborhood, Factory Girl is a hip, cozy eatery serving up vegan and vegetarian breakfast and lunch. The shakshuka (pictured above) is to die for.

Fou Fow Udon

Bowl of udon from Fou Fow Udon

Vegan udon from Fou Fow Udon

Our discovery of Fou Fow Udon was serendipitous. We had been wandering around the Jordaan neighborhood looking for somewhere to eat when we happened upon it, and boy, am I glad that we did. Fou Fow Udon dishes out delicious, aromatic udon with perfectly textured noodles. While not entirely vegetarian, they do offer vegan versions of a few of their udon.

Viêt View

Located in Foodhallen, a collection of over twenty food stalls, Viêt View is the perfect lunch or dinner spot for when you want good food fast. Similar to Fou Fow Udon, Viêt View is neither a vegetarian nor vegan restaurant, but it does have several vegetarian options.

Well, that does it for my list. Hopefully, I can return to Amsterdam in the not-too-distant future and discover even more scrumptious, vegetarian-friendly restaurants. In the meantime, let me know if you have been to any of these restaurants, or if there are any that you would add to this list!
